Creature Conserve Workshops

We give participants the opportunity to build their leadership skills and practice making conservation science more accessible, meaningful, and relevant.

Our skill-based workshops bring artists, designers, writers, and scientists together around a theme related to animal extinction and challenge them to use their creative talents to make conservation science more accessible, meaningful, and relevant.

Our professional development workshops help participants build leadership skills and identify opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.

They consist of single or multiple sessions, including presentations, feedback opportunities, and access to supporting materials. Most are online via ZOOM.

PAST WORKSHOPS

Diving into the Scientific Literature | Sunday, Oct 29, 2023

  • This workshop is designed to help artists, writers, and other creatives gain practice finding scientific journal articles related to their specific interests as well as reading and finding inspiration in this material. The scientific literature is also the starting point for identifying a possible collaborator (scientist or researcher) or host institution (botanical garden, museum, land conservancy, research lab, university, or wildlife rehabilitation center) for future art/sci work related to saving species and their habitats.

  • Taught by scientist Dr. Lucy Spelman

Finding a Collaborator in the Art/Sci Conservation Space | Saturday, Nov 11 & Sunday, November 12, 2023

  • This workshop will help you develop a strategy for finding a prospective collaborator(s.) The instructors will share their experiences collaborating in the art/sci conservation space; they will share tips about how and where to find collaborators, which platforms and opportunities to use, and how to present your project idea.

  • For artists/writers interested in finding a scientist collaborator; taught by writer Lauren Frausto and artist Faith Williams.

  • For scientists interested in finding an artist or writer collaborator; taught by scientists Dr. Lucy Spelman and Dr. Bianca Brown.

Behind the Research Paper: Making Science Visual | Sunday, November 19, 2023

  • This workshop is designed to give artists a deeper appreciation of the science that informs conservation by exploring the stories behind the development of scientific research. Through a series of presentations, group discussions, and a creative exercise focused on what goes on behind the production of a research paper, we will unveil the narratives behind field research to create art that promotes wildlife conservation. In the process, we hope to bridge the gap between artists and scientists by learning about personal experiences.

  • Taught by artist Franco Zacha.

Conservation Ethics | Sunday, December 3, 2023

  • This workshop explores the ethics of being an artist, writer, or scientist working in the conservation space. As we navigate our position and knowledge set, how do we concretely explore the ethical concerns associated with conservation? Join the discussion as we ask questions of equity and inclusion, positionality, and the potential for unintended consequences as we develop new research in the field of conservation relating to both individuals and groups of animals, people, and places.

  • Taught by conservationists Shiri Lev, Derek Russell, and Sofiya Shukhova.
